Oral Zinc Supplementation in Chronically HEV-Infected Patients Not Responding to Ribavirin Monotherapy

چکیده
Background: Chronic hepatitis E virus (HEV) infection may progress to end-stage liver disease in immunosuppressed individuals. Ribavirin therapy is efficient most chronic HEV patients, but 10% remain without a sustained virological response (SVR). Objectives: We aimed study whether zinc supplementation could represent therapeutic approach these patients. Methods: Antiviral properties of salts were studied vitro (subgenomic-replicon system), vivo (rabbit model), and retrospectively patients with who did not achieve SVR under ribavirin monotherapy. Results: Zinc inhibited genotype 3 replication vitro. In model acute immunocompetent rabbits, + improve viral clearance compared chronically HEV-infected responding (n = 12), was observed 4/12 (33%) receiving additional supplementation. Conclusions: Oral zinc, an inexpensive, harmless dietary supplement, potentially rescue treatment option for few Further studies are needed elucidate the role HEV.

Sustained suppression of hepatitis C virus by interferon and ribavirin in hemophilic patients not responding to interferon monotherapy.
Thirty-nine hemophiliac patients, negative for human immunodeficiency virus, with chronic hepatitis C who failed to respond to interferon (IFN) at 3 million units (MU) given subcutaneously thrice weekly for at least 3 months were retreated with 5 MU IFN for 6 months followed by 3 MU IFN in combination with daily oral doses of 1 or 1.2 g ribavirin. Thirty-four patients (87%) completed the study....

Background and Aims: Hepatitis C virus (HCV) can cause hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in a significant proportion (≈ 20 %) of individuals with chronic HCV infection (CHC). Currently, CHC is treated with peginterferon and ribavirin, which depending on genotype approximately 50 to 70% of patients are cured. The so-called “extrahepatic HCV infection” or viral replication in regio...
متن کاملDevelopment of a Recombinant Based ELISA using Specific Antibodies to F Protein in HCV Chronically Infected Patients-A Seroprevalence Study
Background and Aims: The hepatitis C virus (HCV) F protein is a recently described, frameshift product of HCV core encoding sequence. Its function and antigenic properties are unknown. In order to assess the presence of antibodies specific for F protein we characterized specific anti-F antibodies in patients with chronic HCV infection. Methods: The F protein was cloned from the HCV genome....
متن کاملResponding to organ failure in HIV-infected patients.
Until recently, patients infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) who had organ failure were not routinely evaluated for transplantation. The poor prognosis for persons with the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) early in the HIV epidemic led to their exclusion from organtransplant waiting lists that were overflowing with patients who were expected to live much longer. The fe...

Introduction: Diarrheal diseases are a serious health problem and important causes of growth retardation and death in the developing world, especially those of prolonged duration. Since diarrhea is constantly found in children with zinc deficiency, very studies supported zinc supplements beneficial on the duration and severity of diarrhea among children. We review the impact of zinc effects on ...
